monthly post:Senior topic finalized

I was struggling to finalized my senior project. I knew it  had to be yearbook related but didn't want to go the traditional approach of explaining what a yearbook is because truth be told, everyone knows what a yearbook is. I wanted to explore more of the business side of yearbook because yearbook is very much a business. You have a budget to keep in mind, staff to teach, and the book to sell. In other words, money, workforce, and product which is what a company is. I also had to keep in mind about possible mentors I have access to. This is how I came up with the idea of management because management is what you have to  keep in mind for the overall company to run efficiently as possible.  I have been volunteering at Kaiser Permanente for over a year now in their pediatrics department. I noticed that it take a combined effort to run it with a lot of people working long hours behind the scenes. For my senior project I want  to be able apply what I learn from my mentor to yearbook to better and more efficiently run it.

Blog 4: Interview Preparation

Content:

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?

I plan to interview Joan Pleta. She is the department administrator of pediatrics at Kaiser Permanente.  I am interviewing her because she had to run a department which falls under what you can to do in management. I want to be able to compare what she does and what I have to do as co-Eic. I also want to learn what I learn from her so I can apply it to my leadership position as co-Eic of yearbook.

2.  You have to ask 5 questions.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?  Ask open-ended questions.  What are open-ended questions?

  • What is something you can tell me about the difficulties of leading a large group of people?
  • How do you manage conflicting personalities in the workplace?
  • What is something you wish to improve on in terms of leadership?
  • What would you advise people of my age to keep in mind?
  • How did you end up as a D.A.?

Blog 3: Topic Choice and Semester 1 ESLR Goals

1. Management

2. What do you plan to do this year to show growth in each of the ESLRs?
iPoly Citizen             To become an ideal ipoly citizen I recognize the importance of working as an individual in a community environment in which, everyone must do their part  to create a memorable high school experience. As such I vow to put my part in participating in helping plan and execute  the numerous events that will go on through out the year.

Effective Learner              I realize that I must take charge of my own learning as it is for my own benefit. To achieve this I realize I  mustn't be afraid to ask questions or put myself out of my comfort zone. I will continue to be responsible by carrying a planer and being up to date with all of my assignments. I try to be more efficient with my time and try not to procrastinate as much to allow me more time to appropriately study for my core classes.

Effective User of Technology               I acknowledge that I could be using the technology at my disposal ( power point, word, photoshop etc.) in a more productive manner. So I will try to incorporate the use of technology to help me  to produce an in depth backbone for my topic.

      Effective Communicator
I realize as being in ipoly for three years that social media such as Facebook, and texing are unreliable when trying to communicate to others. So I will put a greater effort to be assessable to help. I realize that everyone's opinion should be taken in consideration and shouldn't be judged for their views. As co-editor in chief I have realized the importance of being a leader but also being a listener. Even though we as staff have different tasks we must communicate as we have one goal to produce a quality book. That task is impossible without a strong communication between the staff and the editors. My goal is to improve how I communicate with others by putting more importance of making time for people.

Summer Mentorship Component

Literal:

1. Log
2. Mini Orth

     email: mimiorth@gmail.com
     ph. (626) 798-1680
3. Questions

How do I transfer the information I learned to my role as Eic to my school?
What is the best way to deal with conflict between the staff?
What is the best way to deal with the editors?
How do I balance the "fun" time and productivity in yearbook?
How do I best keep the workflow in yearbook?

Interpretive:

 1. What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?

The most important thing I learned was the importance of keeping staff moral because if I do my job right and keep them wanting to come to yearbook, they will be more willing to do the work. It help put my position into perspective because I cannot make a good book without the staff. I realized being at camp with all the other schools that the best books like walnut have staffs that are willing to put in the time and effort because they truly enjoy the environment that the yearbook room brings.

Applied:

1. How did what you did help you choose a topic?  Please explain.

I knew I was going to do yearbook but I am going to do yearbook as an organization. While at camp they stressed the importance of treating yearbook as more than a class and more like a business. So as my topic I chose to do the Business of yearbook. This will be something that incorporates all aspects of yearbook; financial, product and staff. This class help me understand the true essence of what you need to be  good yearbook Eic and how that leadership translates to a good yearbook and experience.
